From the number of litter registrations it is apparent, that this year again few pulis were born.

Black: 320

Unfortunately I believe that we cannot expect a significant rise in numbers for the year 2007 either. Such a detrimental process has commenced in puli breeding that can entail consequences not to be foreseen. The number of registered, pedigree puli litters is falling so sharply, that in a few years’time we may slip back to the level and  numbers of the pumi or mudi breeding stock. Unfortunately the demand for the puli has dropped and the selling price is so low that it is virtually impossible to at least balance the breeders’ budget. Concurrent to this more and more breeders do not register the whole litter for pedigrees, or none of them at all, since thus they do not have to attend shows, pay for pedigree documentation, chipping and even if the whelps are sold for a lower price, the breeder can „breed” more economically. No matter how good these individual dogs thus sold without a pedigree may be, from a breeding point of view they disappear off the radar. There is enormous responsibility lying on the shoulders of HPK (Hungaria Puli Club) and MEOE (Hungarian Kennel Club). Jointly they should somehow revive the interest in the puli as well as the inclination to breed. I feel we live in a world where dog breeding is not the prerogative of the everyday average person and in this situation many decent puli breeders choose breeding without registration (pedigree) which in turn will lead to the decline in the numbers and quality of the pure-bred stock

 Conclusions

Based on studying the litter registrations, it can be stated, that unfortunately the thesis, or objective, that we should use the most outstanding stud dogs in larger ratios for producing the next generations is not prevalent, albeit this could initiate the tranformation and reinforcement of the desired attributes and accelerate genetic improvement. From the number of matings it can be well seen that apart from a few exceptions, the stud dogs are used once, maybe twice. It seems that everyone uses their own stud for mating, maybe takes the bitch to be mated, but only within short distances. We have heard often enough that our bitch may not be most ideally suited to the stud in our village. However there are advantages too, for thus the future generation does not originate from a few studs and genetic narrowing does not threaten, but the chance of genetic progress is also much less.

From the genetic background of black studs it is clearly apparent that they originate from a rather diverse and divaricated family, thus genetic narrowing is not a threat, though much stronger emphasis should be put on researching rare, valuable blood-lines. The most hopeful situation is that of the masked fawn (fakó) stock, since most masked offspring are of heterozygous black or masked x black parentage, thus the excellent blacks continuously widen and improve the masked stock. The spreading of the grey colour is yet to come, as, according to litter registrations only 4 whelps could be said to have been grey. The white studs used for breeding can be said to show a very narrow genetic variable as, in many cases, they are of the same family or very closely related. Those breeding white colour dogs should give priority to white, well pigmented dogs born to black (masked) parents, and should track black and masked studs that pass on the white variant, since the possibility of genetic expansion lies with them.

The list of pulis born in 2006 is not complete, as also the studs used in breeding. Unfortunately there was disruption in the registering (pedigree) systems of MEOE at the end of last year, therefore I could not process some of the data connected to a few litter registrations.
